Geopolitics

I listen to far too many, but I like listening to “conversations” between two people rather than ‘anchor-style’ Youtube channels from the United States. I prefer to listen to diplomats, businessmen or people with lived experience dealing with China – either in business or politics. These are channels or thinkers you’ve probably not heard of as they are mostly not from the West:

  • Smalltown Voice – Conversation between a Greek/Brit and a Chinese lady about geopolitical topics of the day
  • Conversations Among the Ruins – US-based. I just find the conversations between the father and son so endearing. I wish I could have conversations like that with my dad or mum.
  • Gita Wirjawan – This is in Bahasa Indonesia, but there are subs, and sometimes there are interviews in English.
  • Kishore Mahbubani – tough-talking former diplomat from Singapore. My thoughts about geopolitics align with his. His books are quite a read.
  • George Yeo – Singapore’s former Foreign Affairs minister. Fantastic diplomatic and geopolitical thinker. I can’t seem to find his website, but just search for his name – lots of videos on Youtube.
  • Taipology – Angelica is fantastic in making Taiwanese realpolitik understandable to Western audiences. Her Substack is also fantastic.
  • Chandran Nair – From the Global Institute for Tomorrow. A Malaysian businessman and activist with a long experience dealing with China and various governments. Can’t seem to find his website, but many videos of his talks on Youtube.
  • Inside China Business – No-nonsense updates, always properly referenced, about business developments in China. From an American who has been living and doing business with China for decades.
  • Keyu Jin – Beijing born, tenured professor of the London School of Economics. I follow her also because she knows her stuff. One of those rare folks who will tell you real stuff about the downsides and upsides China’s economy.

I don’t follow these people to get “accurate” news. I don’t think there’s such a think I follow them because I want to be exposed to their perspectives and opinions. I also tend to follow people who are quiet, level-headed and not dramatic or shouty.
